Carbohydrates: Are they good for you?

Carbohydrates role in our Diets.

Carbohydrates, Carbs for short, are not an essential nutrient. They are designed to make you store fat. They say that they are the primary source of energy for our body, but I disagree. When present in our diet, yes we only burn glucose which comes from the carbs. It stops our body from burning fat for fuel and it goes into fat storing mode. Our evolution has created a body that stores fat when carbs are plentiful. In nature carbs usually ripen in summer and late fall, making us store fat for the coming winter when food will not be plentiful. But with the inventions of transportation, refrigerating, freezing, and preserving methods we are able to eat carbs all year long.

When we eat carbs our body releases insulin into the blood steam for a variety of reasons.  First it decides that since we are eating carbs then this is the fuel that we will be using for our energy.  It stops the burning of fat for fuel.  It signals our bodies to let glucose into our cells to be used as energy.  If there is still glucose left over, then it stores it in our muscles and liver for a store of immediately accessible energy.  Then if there is still more of this glucose it stores it as fat for later use.  This is where all the ideas that glucose is the primary fuel for our bodies comes from.  Not only does it do all this, but it also makes us hungrier and makes it to where we eat more.  This shows that carbs are addictive.  This article tells how carbs are addictive like cocaine. “Intense Sweetness Surpasses Cocaine Reward.”

Our bodies have developed through evolution to eat as much as we can when food supplies and calories are abundant.  Eating carbs makes it to where we can store energy for a later use when food supplies will be unavailable like wintertime.  It also stores the necessary vitamins in the fat for use when they will not be available.  A, D, E, and K are fat soluble vitamins that are stored in fat.  When we burn the fat for fuel our bodies have access to the necessary vitamins.  When our body swaps over to burning fat for fuel.  The liver takes the fat and produces ketones that cells are able to use for energy.

So, our bodies are designed to eat carbs that make us hungry, eat as much as we can, to store energy for later use.  We are not designed to eat carbs all year long.  We are designed by evolution to cycle our diet with the seasons.  This means that there are times when we do not have carbs to eat and our body switches to burning fat for fuel.  This ensures that our body stays metabolically flexible between burning carbs and burning fat.

This constant barrage of carbs causes inflammation that when let to constantly continue creates chronic inflammation in the body.  This chronic inflammation leads to a whole host of autoimmune diseases and health issues.

My experience with reducing or eliminating cabs from my diet.

  • Arthritis disappeared
  • Blood Pressure became normal
  • Acne got better
  • Tooth abscesses ceased
  • A cyst on my thumb disappeared, a doctor told me we would need to do surgery to get rid of it.  Already had it removed once with surgery, but it returned.
  • A big polyp in my sinuses disappeared, a doctor told me the only way to get rid of it was surgery.
  • Pre-diabetic symptoms disappeared
  • Hypoglycemia disappeared
  • Energy levels increased
  • Hunger decreased
  • Felt better overall

My Conclusion

I believe that we are meant to cycle our diets with the season and most carbohydrate foods ripen in nature during the fall when we need to store fat for the coming winter.  Then in winter we should be eating protein and fat to fuel our body.  Giving the body a break from the carbs which keeps our metabolic flexibility in tack.

Carbohydrates in our Diet.

Carbs, short for carbohydrates, are foods that are high in or turn into glucose. If we look to nature, which is where we have gotten our food until recently, Carbs are not abundant in nature all year round. Most carb rich foods ripen in summer and fall. This means that we did not eat carbs all year long. We ate seasonally, concentrating on protein, fats, and greens for at least half of the year. Recently with the advent of transportation, refrigeration, freezing, and preserving methods we have changed to eating carbs all year long.

Carbs are Designed to Make Us Fat.

Eating Carbs tells our bodies that we are not going to be burning fat for energy. Our body thinks that carbs are plentiful, and we need to be storing them as fat for the coming winter. They make us hungry, so we eat more, so we store as much fat as possible. Carbs are very addictive. When we eat carbs our body releases insulin. This insulin:

  • Tells your body that we are not burning fat for energy.
  • Tells your body that we will burning glucose and all left over glucose will be stored.
  • Insulin gets the glucose out of the blood stream and stores it, so we can eat more. This causes insulin spikes and valleys.
  • Tells your body to recycle the sodium in our bodies to retain water.
  • Water is stored with fat. 3 to 4 grams of water are stored with each gram of fat.
  • Stops all healing processes and focuses on storing fat. Healing processes like autophagy, apoptosis, human growth hormone release, and stem cell release.
  • Extended periods of eating carbs causes inflammation.
  • When we continue eating carbs all year long it causes Chronic Inflammation.
  • Chronic inflammation causes a host of autoimmune diseases.

Carbs are not an essential nutrient and are for short term energy. Which makes us need to eat constantly. While burning fat for energy is a long term energy and does not require you to eat all the time to maintain energy.
